For something a bit different I thought I'd show you my go-to products and FOTD (face of the day) that I wear most normally when I'm working or in a hurry.  I change around my makeup products a lot but this month these seem to be my go-to products:

Base: Benefit Porefessional, Maybelline BB Cream for Oily Skin* in Light.

Face: Benefit Hoola (contour) The Balm Cabana Boy Blush, Ardell Brow Kit
Eyeshadow: Lime Crime Eyeshadow Helper (primer), Maybelline Color Tattoo - Inked in Pink, Saucebox Eyeshadow in Caramella (crease)
Eyes: Mac Eye Kohl in Smolder, Rimmel Scandaleyes in Nude (waterline), DiorShow Mascara followed by Maybelline Full n Soft Mascara
Lips: Maybelline Colorsensational Lipstick in 330 Sugar Plum

It's a really natural look but is so easy to do and makes me feel 'put together' without having to go to much effort.

Do you have a go-to look?

The last of my subscription beauty boxes landed today via courier and I was really intrigued to see what Bellabox would offer this month.

This month Bellabox teamed up with Cleo which meant the boxes were a little late in arriving so they could include next month's issue of Cleo.  This also meant the parcel that arrived was a lot bigger than usual.

September Bellabox - Spring Party Essentials
The theme for this month is Spring Party Essentials and I can really see the correlation between the theme and the products.  This box was chocka block with the magazine, 6 full size products and one sample.

Here's what was inside...

Manicare Glameyes - Kelly Lashes $11.98
I love false lashes and these look like they'll be really nice and natural - this is a great addition to a spring party essential pack.

Footcare Gel Cushions $8.99
Perfect for party shoes these gel cushions stick to the sole of your shoe to make a night in heels bearable.  I love these.

ASAP Pure Mineral Lip Pencil in Three $20
This is a neutral pinky lip liner that will go nicely under a lot of lipsticks.  Lipliner is great for making your lipstick last longer and stop any feathering and ASAP is a reputable skincare brand so I'm excited to try something from their mineral makeup line.

Schick Hydro Silk Shaver $9.95
I've used this razor before and loved it so was happy to see this included.

Garnier Ambre Solaire Natural Bronzer Spray in Light $14.95
With Summer approaching I've already started testing out some fake tans and this is brand I haven't tried before.  Am happy to try this one out and see how it stacks up next to my current favourites.

Elegant Touch Envy Wraps $8.99
I've never used nail wraps before but I think these would look really cute on my toes.

Montagne Jeunesse Dead Sea Mud Pac - trial size
This was a nice friendly reminder that I need to do face masks more often.  My skin has been very dull lately so this could just be the pick me up it needs.

And the bonus October issue of Cleo

As you can see this month's Bellabox was jam packed full of full size items that are perfect for Spring.  I am so happy with everything that was included in this months box.  Out of the three subscription boxes I received this month this one definitely holds the most value to me and at only $15 with over $75 value included I think you'd be hard pressed to be disapointed with this box.

I'd love to know what you think?

Lipfactory September 2013

All the beauty boxes I subscribe to seem to be arriving later and later each month but this box which comes from America has still managed to beat the arrival of Bellabox.  In fact Bellabox hasn't even been shipped yet but we're getting off topic.

The Lipfactory box contained 6 full sized products and 2 samples...

ModelCo Shine Ultra Lip Gloss in Strip Tease
I find it quite amusing that this Australian product was shipped all the way to America only to be shipped back to me here.  This is a lovely shimmery pinky neutral gloss that I'm bound to use this coming Summer.

Bombshell Cosmetics Eyeliner in Amethyst
This is a felt tip eyeliner which claims to be water resistant.  It's in a beautiful purple shade and because you use it just as you would a marker I imagine it would be super easy to use.  Can't wait to try this out.

J Cat Beauty The Big Eye Pencil in Charcoal
This looks very similar to the NYX eye pencils and can be used as an eyeshadow or eyeliner.  It's not a brand I've heard of before which is one of the main reason I love subscribing to this box.

LA Fresh Waterproof Makeup Remover x2
I got one of these recently and it worked really well so I'm glad to get another couple of these. They'll come in handy when I go on holiday to NZ in a couple of weeks.

Absolute Oil Control Tissues
This is a pack of 50 oil blotting tissues.  My skin's on the dry side so I'll probably give these to a friend.

Bombshell Cosmetics Lip Gloss in Nude Beach
This is a browny gold colour that is completely not my colour.  Another one to give away.

Nabi Pencil Sharpener
This was a bonus product and is a sharpener with two different sized holes making it great for sharpening all sizes of eyeliners.  Was really happy to receive this product.

I was pretty happy with most things in this box but I'm finding that I'm just getting overloaded with products from all these beauty boxes and I'm just not getting around to using them.  This box costs approximately $35 depending on the conversion rate at the time but because I'm not using the products inside it's just not good value for me to keep purchasing them.  For the time being I've cancelled my subscription to Lipfactory but I would still not hesitate to recommend them as a great subscription service.  Especially if you're looking for mainly makeup products and different brands that aren't available here in Australia.

What do you think of this month's box?

Her Fashion Box - September 2013

Her Fashion Box September - Accessories

Her Fashion Box September - Beauty Products

Her Fashion Box was an interesting box this month and I have mixed feelings about the contents.

Here's what I received...

Her Fashion Box Clutch
I like the idea of adding a clutch in here.  It's a good accesory item that mostly everyone would use.  Unfortunately I don't really like the style of this one.  Also the HFB magazine states that the value of this is $39.95 which considering it is 'Made in China' and the sequins are already moving around a lot I highly doubt.  I'd love to hear from anyone who would pay $40 for this clutch alone.

Maybelline Color Show Nail Polish x2 (Blue Freeze & Coral Crush)
Nail Polish is always something you'll hear me whinge about in beauty boxes.  It seems like a bit of a "filler" product that is always being included and more often than not they seem to be the colours that no one would buy (read... yuk).  These colours are quite nice though and I can see myself wearing the coral shade on my toes in Summer.  The dark blue will be given away to someone else.

LonVitalite Collagen Firming & Moisturising Face Mask
A hydrating sheet mask is always a nice product to receive.  I've seen this brand in another beauty box before but not this product and am looking forward to trying it out.

'The Brando' Silver plated ID bracelet
I feel really undecided about this bracelet, it's quite masculine looking so I think I'll be hesitant to wear it.

Designer Brands Kohl Eyeliner & Chubby Lip Crayon
I was really disappointed to see this included in Her Fashion Box this month.  Designer Brands is a budget brand that I've found to be consistently of very poor quality.  Her Fashion Box costs $40 a month to subscribe to and I don't expect to see $5 budget eyeliners in there.  Just saying.

Silver Plated 'White Hot' Ring
This ring is stunning but not something I personally would wear... also it doesn't fit any of my fingers and I can't seem to be able to make it smaller.

PureTan Pure Moisture Coconut Creme Body Scrub & Organic Extra Virgin 100% Coconut Oil
These two 15ml samples were happily received as I love anything with coconut oil in it.  I received two instead of one as a thankyou for filling out the survey for last month's box.

As you can tell I have quite a lot of negative things to say about the products I received this month.  The face mask and the coconut oil samples are probably the only 2 things I will use and enjoy although I might try some of the other things out.

I will say though in fairness that this is to be expected with a subscription service like this.  I know for a fact that some people will love every item in this box and will use all of it and I could well be the only person who doesn't.  I've been a huge fan of Her Fashion Box right from the start and I still am.  I would still recommend signing up to a subscription but just keep in mind that every so often you'll get a box or a few products that just don't suit you.  The majority of the time however I'm sure you'll be impressed.  The main disappointment for me this month was the inclusion of such a budget brand - Designer Brands.

If you want to know more or would like to sign up just head over to

What did you think of the products this month?

Dear Family,
Eeep you arrive tonight - can't wait!! (If only my sister was coming too).  It's looking to be such a lovely weekend.
Dear Lucy,
You've been so good this week.  It's weird.  What's going on?
Dear Face,
I'm sorry for constantly trying new products on you, it seems like you've had enough.  You've started to calm down now but red, rashy, itchy skin wasn't fun for anyone.

Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream for Oily Skin

For someone who suffers from dry skin the thought of trying out a product designed to help clear up oily, blemish proned skin is just simply ridiculous.  When the Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream for Oily Skin* crossed my desk I really had no intention of trying it out.  I had already tried the Maybelline BB Cream for Normal skin and I wasn't that impressed with it.  It didn't give me much coverage and it didn't last very long on my skin before fading away into nothing.

Swatch of Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream for Oily Skin in Light

After swatching this product on the back of my hand I was immediately impressed by the colour.  It looked like the perfect match for my skin and the texture of it seemed quiet lovely.  Intrigued, I tried it out for a day.  As I thought the Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream for Oily Skin in Light is a perfect match for my skin.  It's a lovely neutral colour that blends in really well.  In my opinion this BB Cream has a light to medium coverage (definitely more coverage than the original Maybelline BB Cream for normal skin) and can be easily finished off with a layer of powder to increase the coverage.  It covered up the redness in my cheeks quite easily and evened out my skintone perfectly.  When worn on it's own I find it lasts a good 6 hours before starting to fade and with powder over the top I can get through a full day without any fading.

Overall very impressed with this product and with the added bonus of SPF15 I'll be using this as my go-to BB cream for Summer.

Moral of the story: Don't judge a book by it's cover

Keep Smiling

This post is a little late in coming but I managed to try out a few sample products in August...

Suigo Conditioner & Treatment
I used up the shampoo much faster than these.  Apart from the wierd smell I enjoyed using these products.  They're very hydrating and leave my hair really soft.  Full review here.

LA Fresh - Waterproof Makeup Remover
Did a good job but wouldn't go out on my way to find out where I can even buy these.  Think they came in an earlier Bellabox.  Would buy them if I found them in-store somewhere.

Dr LeWinns Cleansing Milk
Received this in a Her Fashion Box and loved it.  Full Review here.

Aesop Damascan Rose Facial Treatment
There was .75 of a ml in this little sample but I managed to squeeze 2 uses out of it.  In short it is amazing.  Both times I used it I noticed a significant improvement of my skin.  It has a strong scent of Rose and Neroli and left my skin so hydrated and plump.  I'm dying to buy a full size bottle but at $75 for 25ml I'm finding it a little difficult to hit the Buy Now button.  Maybe my sister will read this post and decide to buy me a bottle out of the goodness of her heart ;)

Pureology Previous Oil Softening Conditioner
Pretty decent haircare range - as always I used up the shampoo long before the conditioner.  Full Review Here.

Kevin Murphy Angel Wash & Angel Rinse
I don't know why but the names Wash & Rinse confused me and I had to keep trying to work out which one is Shampoo and which was Conditioner.  It makes sense when I read it now but not when it's 6am and I'm half asleep in the shower.  Anyway I didn't like these products and didn't even both finishing them off.  Life's too short to use shitty hair products.

Grange Jetty

Dear Ocean
It was lovely to pay you a visit this week, even if it was a dreary rainy day.  Something about the ocean calms me and the pure vastness of it reminds me how small my problems really are.

Dear Adelaide Show
You are so much better than the Darwin Show.  I knew this would be the case but I just didn't realize how much.  I had the best time last weekend; exploring, eating yummy treats and buying show bags.  The best part was the delicious Hot Jam Donut.

Dear Dad
I'm so excited that you and Sam (brother) are randomly coming to see me next weekend and even happier that Mum might be coming too.  I'm just sitting here with crossed fingers and toes hoping it does eventuate as planned.  It's been way too long between visits.

Dear Lucy
Standing outside at 10.30 at night in my pyjamas calling your name and begging you to come inside wasn't a highlight of my week.  I went to bed very sad that we couldn't find you to bring you inside.  More infuriating was when we woke up the next morning to find you sleeping in the spare room.  Houdini Kitty you win this round.

Dear Bright Lipstick
Yes I wore you out in public for the very first time this week.  Twice.  I'm very proud of myself and can quite quickly see this turning into an obsession.

Dear Readers

I'm so excited to introduce you to a range of haircare you probably haven't heard of before.  Paul Brown Hawaii Haircare is relatively new to Australia and is the reason I've been having not just "good hair days" but Amazing Hair Days for the past few weeks.  Yup I said it.
Just to give you some background on my hair; it is naturally fine and I have an oily scalp but dry ends.  I hate products that leave residue in my hair and so thus far haven't been a huge fan of any hair oils or shampoo and conditioners that leave any type of film on the hair.  I generally have to wash my hair everyday or else shove it in a pony tail on the second day.
Ok ok enough about me I'll get on with telling you about these products I've fallen in love with....

The Hapuna Volumizer Shampoo and Volumizer Conditioner* is designed for people with fine, thin hair and works to not only cleanse the hair but add volume dimension too.  These products are specially formulated with Paul Brown's Hawaiian Protein Flora Complex and are free from sodium chloride, sulfates and parabens.  It also contains sunflower seed extract to help protect and prolong haircolour.
The shampoo lathers up really easily and instead of my obligatory 2 washes I can usually get away with only washing once (twice if I've been working out or it's been a hotter day).  The conditioner is very lightweight and I work a decent size through my hair concentrating more on the ends where my hair is driest.  To trial this properly I didn't use any other products in my hair, blowdried it as per normal and was really surprised with the outcome.
The biggest thing I found with this haircare range is that it really delivered on the volume claims.  As I mentioned before I've been having amazing hair days (if I do say so myself ha) and it's all due to these products.  My hair feels so lightweight and clean and my roots are noticeably volumised.  The other difference I noticed is that my hair is starting to get some shine back into it and it's been a long time since I've seen that.  Overall I have been really impressed with the results.
The Shampoo and Conditioner are both 296 ml and retail at $29.95 for the Shampoo and $32.95 for the Conditioner.
The other product that I was sent along with the Shampoo & Conditioner is the Hapuna Argan Oil with Kukui Nut Lipids Finishing Shine Serum.  As I mentioned earlier I'm not a huge fan of oils as I find they're just too heavy for my fine hair but I thought I'd give this a chance anyway and try it out.  Boy am I glad I did.  This is the first hair oil that I've tried that actually is lightweight and I can't tell it's in my hair.  There's no "shiny" residue, no sticky feeling in my hair and I can still go 2 days without washing my hair when I wear it.  I apply one small pump of this oil only into the ends of my damp hair before blow drying and it leaves my hair really soft and also amps up the shine factor.  This oil comes in a generous 59ml bottle and is retailed at $34.95
I will let you know that I was gifted these products to trial but all thoughts and opinions are purely my own.  I can honestly say I am really impressed with these products.  If you are interested in purchasing these products they are available in selected salons or online at

Let's be honest though when you're introduced to a new brand like this it's one thing to read a positive review and it's another to get the chance to try them out for yourself.  That's why the lovely people who supply Paul Brown Hawaii would like to give my readers (that's you) the chance to win the three products I mentioned above!

I used up 7 items in August including a couple of things that have been hanging around nearly empty for way too long.
Nivea In Shower Rich Body Lotion
This is a fantastic body lotion I picked up in the Priceline sale in August that I absolutely loved.  You apply in the shower, rinse off and that's it - you're moisturised!  No need to apply moisturiser after a shower and wait for it to dry/sink in.  Perfect for the colder days.  My full review is here!
John Frieda Conditioner
I coloured my hair using the John Frieda Precision Foam Colour in August and loved it.  By far the best home hair colour I've used.  This is the conditioner that came with it and it's a great size that lasted me quite a long time.  Nice and hydrating without being too heavy.
Akin Lavender & Geranium Body Moisturiser
I love to use this lavender scented moisturiser before bed as Lavender is known to have a calming effect and help you sleep.  This is a lovely rich moisturiser that smells beautiful.
St Ives Apricot Scrub - Fresh Skin
I'm a huge fan of the St Ives Scrub but the one I usually use is the Renew & Firm and is a lot gentler.  This one has a lot more granules that give a deeper exfoliation.  Probably more recommended for someone with an oilier skin type as opposed to my dry skin.  I used this very gently on my face or all over my body for a great exfoliation.
Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat in 2
This is a beautiful under eye concealer/brightener that I loved using.  This is a hugely hyped product and apparently one sells every few seconds or something crazy like that.  In my honest opinion I don't think it's worth the $55 or so it retails for.  It does do a great job but there are better brightening concealers out there for a cheaper price.  Yep I said it!
Batiste Dry Shampoo in Tropical
Holy grail product that I use all the time.  Tropical isn't my favourite scent but it does the job and that's what matters to me.
Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil
This is a cult French product that I purchased after receiving a sample bottle in a beauty box.  This product smells divine and leaves me skin feeling so hydrated and soft.  I used this on my face as a night-time moisturiser and all over my body when it was feeling particularly dry.  It's on the pricier side at $24.95 for a 50ml but I would definitely purchase this again.

Darwin Sunset - 2012

Dear Darwin Sunsets
I miss you.  I miss living by the ocean and watching the warm sun sink slowly into you.

Dear Weather
Thanks for sending a couple of warm sunny days my way.  That little snapshot of warmth was enough to make me feel human again and boy did it feel good to wear my jandals even if it was only for one day.

Dear Work
Thankyou for sending everyone overseas on a work conference.  Thankyou for sending me to a hotel this weekend instead and paying for dinner, breakfast and a bottle of champage.  And one more thankyou for not leaving me with much work to do meaning I'm feeling pretty chilled out about now :)

Dear Lucy
Makeup is not for cats.  My clothes are not for cats.  My new reclining chairs are not for cats.  NOT FOR CATS!
Dear Weekend
Boy I can't wait to see you;  The Royal Adelaide Show, A night of luxury in the city, A massage - you're looking to be a good one ;)
Happy Friday Everyone - what have you got planned for the weekend?

I recently attended The Laser Lounge at Westlakes (South Australia) to have my very first micro-dermabrasion treatment.*

To say I was apprehensive would be an understatement.  I knew this wouldn't be like a traditional relaxing facial and would be more invasive but on the other side the results would be more effective.  The purpose of micro-dermabrasion is to get rid of the top layer of your skin, helping to stimulate collagen and bring new skin to the surface.

Microdermabrasion machine

The treatment involves using a wand type hand piece which has a nozzle about the size of a finger tip.  As the wand is moved slowly over the skin, a sand type substance comes out of the nozzle and brushes over the skin.  This substance is immediately sucked up with a gentle vacuuming action removing dead skin cells and unblocking pores as it goes.  This process not only unblocks pores and removes dead skin cells but also increases circulation which in turn produces more oxygen to help regenerate the skin.

Microdermabrasion Wand

Sand type substance which is pushed through the wand to exfoliate the skin

The microdermabrasion treatment wasn't at all painful, it was more of an uncomfortable feeling mostly caused by the pressure of the vacuuming action.  I felt a slight tingling and once it was over my face felt strange - almost like it was swollen (it wasn't).  Directly after the microdermabrasion, a lotion called Deep Pore Plus was applied all over my skin which is designed to close up the pores.  This felt very tingly but was over in a matter of seconds.  After this a hydrating mask was applied to the skin and I was left to relax for 10 minutes.  This mask sunk into my skin and as it is best left on as long as possible (and I was going straight home) I left the mask on overnight.

I noticed my skin was fairly red but this faded quite quickly and if I had been going back to work after this treatment I could've quite easily applied some foundation or powder over top and no one would have been the wiser.

Products applied after treatment

The Laser Lounge pointed out that I may experience a small breakout or flaking of the skin in the first week which is a result of the skin being stimulated.  I luckily didn't have any breakouts but I did notice my skin was much dryer than normal and a little bit flaky in places.  After about 5 days the real results started to come through and I was surprised by how much clearer my skin looked.  The only real way I can describe it is to say my skin looked a lot fresher and brighter.  My whole face was much more softer to touch and I didn't have to pile on the moisturiser as I normally would in Winter, it felt perfectly plump and hydrated.  I was actually really surprised that it worked so well.  All in all I would say the results of this treatment were noticeably visible for at least the following 3-4 weeks which was more than what I had imagined.

This microdermabrasion treatment can be purchased from The Laser Lounge for $100 and is recommended if you want to improve thick, oily & congested skin, fine lines, uneven skin texture or acne scarring.  I can assure you that the lovely ladies at the Laser Lounge will look after you and help get you fantastic results.

Have you ever had a treatment like this?

Kayte xx

*This treatment was kindly provided to me compliments of The Laser Lounge but as always this post is purely my own opinion.

I feel super organised right now as it's usually well into the next month before I post about my last month's favourites.  I like to post these every month to motivate myself to use new products but also to show you what products I'm loving.

Overall August was a pretty bland month for me.  The weather was particularly cold and stormy and I started to suffer from a little cabin fever.  This weekend however has been unbeleivable with warm, sunny weather that warmed me from the inside out and made me feel human again.  The sun has a lot to answer for :)

Here are the top ten beauty products I loved in August:

August 2013 - Top Ten Beauty Products

Nivea In-Shower Rich Body Lotion for Very Dry Skin
You can read my full review here but basically this product is a God-send.  You apply it in the shower, rinse off and then pat your skin dry when you get out and then you're moisturised.  It's so easy and because I'm terrible at moisturising when I get out of the shower it's absolutely perfect for me.

Kevin Murphy Anti-gravity Spray
I've been really getting into volumising products for my hair.  I have fine hair but for some reason I've always shied away from volume!  Not anymore - I want volume and I want lot's of it.  This product is sprayed onto your hair while it's wet, combed through and then you blow dry as normal.  It has a beautiful lavender scent and doesn't dry crunchy in the hair (I hate products that do that).  It gives me volume but also still lets me run my hands through my hair.

Sigma Flat Kabuki Brush
I've temporarily put my Beauty Blender Sponge aside and am loving my Kabuki Brush again.  I've been primarily using a BB Cream as my base this month and I find the Kabuki Brush buffs it into my skin and gives a much better finish than the Beauty Blender.

Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream for Oily Skin in Light*
This BB Cream took me by a huge surprise as I do not have oily skin at all.  I wasn't going to even try this out but as I was sent it for review I thought I better give it a go.  I will post up a full review of this later in the month but this BB Cream sits so nicely on my skin, gives a light to medium coverage and is neither yellow nor pink toned - very neutral.  It blends into my skin effortlessly and with a bit of powder on top lasts me all day.  It's all I've been using for a base the last few weeks.

The Balm Blush - Cabana Boy
I branched out a little bit this month and picked up a slightly more colourful blush than the light pink I usually favour.  I'm really impressed with this blush and it's highly pigmented so I only need to use the tiniest amount.  I picked this up in the recent sale at David Jones which you can read about here.

Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer in Brightener
Picked this up in the half price Maybelline sale that Priceline had last month and it's a great brightener/concealer for under the eyes.

Daiso Eyebrow Pencil
Just realised that I had this in my July favourites too but I really do love it.  It's a fantastic waxy brown pencil that fills in my eyebrows perfectly.

Maybelline Color Tattoo Metal in Inked in Pink
Another half price sale acquisition that I've fallen in love with.  I'm a big fan of the Color Tattoos so I couldn't not pick up a colour from the Metal line and this metallic rosy pink is a beautiful base color or even on it's own all over the lid.  Loving it.

Belleme Cosmetics - Don't Smudge Eye Liner in Black
I had to go back through old blog posts to see that I got this in my July Lipfactory Box.  I've been wearing this black eyeliner to line my top and bottom lash lines.  The tip is quite fine which makes it really foolproof and it can be left as is or smudged out for more of a smoky eye effect.

Maybelline Colorsensational \Lipstick in 330 Sugar Plum
Another Maybelline product that I picked up in the sale and am loving is this Lipstick.  It's a lovely pink based nude colour which is soft and glossy.  It doesn't have the best staying power but it feels so lovely on the lips that I look forward to re-applying anyway.

Do you share any of the same favourites as me?
