Top Tips for a Good Night's Sleep

Mecca Cosmetica Lip Balm, In Essence Sleep Easy Essential Oil Blend, Insight Timer App, Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil

Sleep has been something that's always come easily to me for most of my life.  It wasn't until I had a baby and had to deal with interrupted nights and very little sleep that it started to become an issue.  In fact, I had no idea it was even an issue until my baby started sleeping through the night (at about 8 months old).  I was so excited to start getting full nights sleep again but instead, I would lay awake at night staring at the ceiling begging myself to fall asleep.  It took me awhile but I developed some healthy sleep habits, so if you struggle with getting a good night's sleep hopefully some of these tips & tricks will help you as much as they helped me.

Limit Screen Time
It's really easy to fall into the trap of watching tv just before bed, especially if you have a tv in your bedroom.  I don't have a tv in my bedroom anymore and I try to make sure I have at least half an hour's break after watching tv and before going to bed.  If you have an iPhone use the night shift screen function which changes the colour of your screen from a certain time at night, I have mine set to 9pm.

Limit Stimulants
Make sure you're not having any caffeine or other stimulants after 3 or 4 pm.  I also always limit my water intake after 6-7pm so I don't have to wake up to use the bathroom in the night.

Use Essential Oils
Essential Oils can be so helpful for sleep troubles and can be used in a multitude of ways.  I like to use the In Essence Sleep Easy blend in a vaporiser in my room and I'll often put it on a couple of hours before I go to bed so it's off when I'm sleeping (sometimes it can be a distraction).  I've also recently been using the Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil and it's incredible.  Vetiver Oil is one of the main ingredients which is a natural sedative and the blend smells divine.  If you're sensitive to scents and find essentials oils can be overpowering start small and use just a drop on your wrists (always use a carrier oil) and work from there.

Get comfortable
When you hop into bed make sure you're comfortable.  It goes without saying that a comfortable mattress and pillow are worthwhile investments into your mental and physical health.  If you're laying in bed and your mind is racing with things you have to do or things that are worrying you write them down in a journal before turning the light out.  Make sure you're feeling as comfortable and relaxed as possible, use lip balm if your lips are dry, drink a mouthful of water, adjust your blankets and settle in and get comfy.

Meditation
I always thought meditation was a bit too 'alternative' for me but it is really just another word for mindfullness and it has truly changed my life this year.  Every night before I go to bed I use the Insight Timer App on my phone to play a guided sleep meditation.  There are thousands of guided meditations (not just sleep ones) on this free app so I'm confident you'll find something you like.  Basically the guided meditation gives you something to focus on, calms your mind and helps relax you into a peaceful sleep. Try it out , you might just surprise yourself.

  7. Great post! I'm terrible for being on my phone just before I go to sleep......it comes to something when I'm typing on twitter 'Wish I could sleep' or whatever and then I think....ummm, you'd probably get to sleep if you got off your phone!! lol Good advice here though...it's the type of advice I'd tell people but never do myself! I'm terrible :/ (and tired!) ha! xx

  9. No doubt meditation works best when one can't sleep. For me praying before going to bed helps a lot. I always try to not use phone but often fail to stick to my decision. Haha. Thanks for good tips, I'm sure it'll be very useful to many people.
