IMATS Sydney 2017 - Tips, Tricks & Pricing

IMATS Sydney Haul, Tips & Tricks, Pricing, Sales
Pic Credit:

I attended IMATS (International Makeup Artist Trade Show) last weekend in Sydney which has been on my bucket list for at least the last 5 years.  I was so excited to be able to finally go and see what all the fuss was about.  If you want to see what I bought at the event and read about my experience you can read this blog post from earlier in the week.  Today's post will cover my tips and tricks for attending the event and also cover what I spent and how much I saved

Tips & Tricks for Attending IMATS Sydney

Arrive at Lunchtime
The event runs over a Saturday and Sunday.  On Saturday the doors open at 9 and I arrived at about 9:30 and waited in line for approximately 20 minutes.  I stayed for a couple of hours and left around lunchtime.  A lot of people were leaving around lunchtime and I noticed there was no queue at this time.  If I was to attend again I would definitely take my time getting there and aim to arrive around lunchtime or just after.  The booths all seems well-stocked so I doubt there's anything you're going to miss out on.  I guess in future years there may be something exclusive to the event with limited stock but in this year's case there was nothing like that.

Take Cash
I found it a lot quicker to pay by cash than card.  You would think card would be quicker especially now with paypass but I found if I could just ask for what I wanted and hand over the cash it kept things moving a lot quicker.  It also helped me keep a handle on how much I was spending.  There was only one booth (NYX Cosmetics) that I noticed who were card only.   At the Hakuhodo stand if you paid with card it was processed in USD but if you paid by cash they had an AUD price.  It was actually cheaper to pay AUD cash than the USD price.  Not by a lot but with foreign exchange fees charged on your card as well it was worth it to me to have the cash.

Take Water & Snacks
There is a small cafe on hand where you can buy some food and drinks but I didn't want to waste my time queuing up for that as well as makeup.  Keep a bottle of water in your bag and some snacks if you think you'll need them.  As I said we left around lunchtime and we went and got food elsewhere.  The precinct next door has a pub and lots of fast food options, Sushi, Oporto, Subway etc so no need to buy anything there unless you really want to.

Know Your Prices
It's important to know what things are selling for outside the event.  Makeup Net were selling Morphe palettes for $40.  That's $5 less than what they sell them for on their website but you can pick them up for around $38 from Beauty Bay with free shipping.  Most things were about 20% cheaper than in-store which you can often get in sales anyways.  There were a couple of times that I did a quick search of products before I purchased them to make sure it was actually a good deal.  Keep reading below to see what I saved by purchasing at IMATS instead of instore.

As you can see I saved $58.90 by purchasing at IMATS rather than individually in store or online, OR $103.90 if you don't include the ticket price.  Of course this doesn't include shipping prices if I had purchased online but on the other side it also doesn't include the cost to get to the venue (I live a 2 hour drive away and also caught a taxi and public transport some of the way) and any accommodation costs if you are coming from out of town.  If you're purely attending this event to grab a bargain I'm not sure you're going to be entirely satisfied unless you're a makeup artist stocking your kit.  If you're like me and just wanted to attend to see what all the fuss was about, see some inspiring makeup artists and buy some makeup then you might be pleasantly surprised.  Please don't be fooled into thinking that the Sydney IMATS is anything like the ones held in the US or UK, it is very scaled down from what I have seen of the overseas ones but I think it's still worth the trip to see.

Have you attended IMATS Sydney before?  If you have any questions or there's something I haven't covered here feel free to leave me a comment here or on Instagram and I'll do my best to answer.

  1. I haven't attended IMATS before, but I have heard there are some good savings to be had! I'd love to go along, but it is quite busy and I don't know that I would want to put up with the lines and crowds haha

  2. I've always wanted to go IMATS but there has been so much talk lately about how disappointed everyone has been with the stallholders and there isn't much variety. Would you consider attending next year again?

  3. Good tips! I haven't been in years but I'm keen to go again. I think they've learned over the years and now most booths are really well stocked. I'll definitely try to go at lunch time x

  4. Some good tips, and love the price breakdown. It is going to be very helpful as i plan to attend next IMATS, thank you for this post!

  5. I've never been to IMATS - but these sound like awesome tips. I used to really want to go, but nowadays it's not that appealing to me. Still sounds like an awesome experience though :)

  6. One day I will attend IMATS! All these tips are so great, especially the ones about arriving at lunch time and knowing your prices. I was sure to look up the prices I didn't know on my phone at the Brisbane Beauty Expo this week to make sure I was getting a good deal. Great post :)

  7. WOW what an amazing haul! I haven't been to IMATS for a couple of years but when I do I really enjoy their demonstrations and seeing the MUA's in action!

  8. They are good tips! I do think that if you aren't at IMATS first thing you can miss a lot of specials and the best things tend to sell out quick but it's the trade off for having to wait in line.

  9. You made a good saving and I noticed that too that some things aren't necessarily as good an offer as it sounds. Great tips though!! I'd agree! Xx

  10. You have helped all the makeup junkies like me alot in your this blog. Will follow your all the tips if I will be attending IMATS.

  11. Awesome beauty product. Everyone just need to use this with Liquid Matte Lipstick to keep up your perfect beauty.

Feel free to comment or ask any questions. I would love to hear from you x
